Is the system low on refrigerant? Want to know where I start?
I always start by looking carefully at the equipment. If I see an area on a refrigeration coil or part that is oily or greasy, it's checked first.
Properly operating refrigeration equipment should not be oily or greasy.
Do yourself a favor. Keep the equipment clean. It is much easier to catch small leaks around the refrigeration parts when you know that oil was not there before.
For large areas a good degreasing solution is necessary.
For smaller areas I use a can of regular brake cleaner. Brake cleaner is great because it evaporates leaving no residue.
